Who we are
The Riot Grrrls Revue is a community of performers of various genders and sexualities. Our shows promote social consciousness through feminist performance art. The name “Riot Grrrls Revue” is an ode to the Riot Grrrl feminist punk movement that started on the West coast in the 90s, although we are not associated with the punk music scene itself. We use drag, alternative burlesque, comedy, theatrics, improv theatre, fetish theatre, and spoken word as a tool for empowerment. We highlight political issues through brassy satire, so our shows are not a good fit for those who are easily offended.
Burlesque started as a platform for social change through mockery of oppressive systems, and we draw on these original roots in our work. We believe in equality. We aim to make our shows as trans-inclusive as possible. We stand against the systemic oppression of our own bodies. We celebrate body-positivity and sex-positivity and we unabashedly explore kink and fetish themes.
Our shows express various aspects of subversive sexuality and gender-f*ckery on stage. We believe in the power of connection beyond just physical attraction. Although we often use comedy, our shows also explore heavy topics like misogyny, colonialism and sexual violence. We welcome people of all genders and sexualities and from all walks of life to join us at one of our quarterly shows that feature our passion for politics through performance, our love of laughter and kink, and our vehement desire to undermine the cisheteropatriarchy.
THE RIOT GRRRLS REVUE RESPECTFULLY RECOGNIZES THAT WE EXIST ON THE UNCEDED AND UNSURRENDERED TERRITORY OF THE LEKWUNGEN AND W̱SÁNEĆ PEOPLE.
ALL OUR SHOWS BEGIN WITH A TERRITORY ACKNOWLEDGEMENT AS A GESTURE OF RESPECT TOWARDS THE PEOPLE BELONGING TO THE LAND WE PERFORM ON. WE DO THIS AS A SOMBER REMINDER TO SETTLERS OF THE COLONIAL VIOLENCE AND GENOCIDE THAT HAS AND CONTINUES TO DISPLACE INDIGENOUS PEOPLE.
